transmission 03 - gui design, misc tools
One of the things we work on besides Underworld MMO is futuristic operating system GUI (graphical user interface) design. We are constantly researching the work of others in new technologies like that for ideas and resources that can be used in current and future projects.
In addition to that, we often run across useful tools (mostly freeware and Open Source) that we find useful in day to day use for game development, 3d graphics, image editing, audio editing, and more.
These transmissions are our way to post all of that information in one place in an unstructured manner. Leave comments for any questions or suggestions.
I saw a few different references to a GUI called Beryl in the latest issue of Computer Power User magazine. I decided to look more into it and discovered the following:
Beryl
iswas a Window Manager for Unix-based systems such as Linux. It has many next-gen features such as the ability to navigate virtual desktops in 3d space. The new version is called Compiz Fusion.
It’s too bad that these projects do not run on Windows. There are alternatives, but as they cost money, I will review them after the Underworld MMO beta launch. I expect Apple Mac OSX and Microsoft Windows to catch up to this within five years.
